Kamut Flakes

April 9, 2011

Happy weekend, all!

I’m not big into New Year’s Resolutions, but I did make some goals this year.  One of them was to try a new food at least once a month, including new recipes or products.

I’ve been on a total cereal kick lately and have not been at all experimental when it comes to my breakfasts.  This morning, I was craving something warm and comforting for breakfast and wasn’t really in the mood for cereal.

The nice people at Eden Foods sent me a big ol’ bag of kamut flakes to sample, and since I’ve never had them before, I decided to try them out.

The flakes are slightly larger than traditional oats but fairly similar in texture.

To prepare my bowl, I basically treated these little guys as if I was preparing a bowl of oatmeal.

Pumpkin Kamut Breakfast Bowl

1/4 cup dry Eden Foods Kamut Flakes
1 cup water
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1/2 ripe banana
Pinch of sea salt
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup canned pumpkin
1/4 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
1 tsp chia seeds

Combine kamut flakes, salt, water, and almond milk in a small sauce pan and cook over medium-high heat for 5-10 minutes (or until bubbly and thick).  Reduce heat to low and add cinnamon, pumpkin spice, vanilla extract,  pumpkin, banana, chia seeds, and stevia.  Stir to mix.  Remove from heat and serve.

The result?

Didn’t like it at all.

Just kidding!  Obviously.

Kamut flakes are chewier than oatmeal, and dare I say, I might even like them a little bit better!  This was a really filling breakfast and definitely gave me that warm comfort food feeling I was after this morning.  If you haven’t tried them before, I’d definitely suggest that you do ASAP.

Sorry, oatmeal.  Sorry, cereal.  I cheated on you both today.

I know… I’m such a little hussy.
